StovallCabaret (by Tom Dworetzky)
Paul Oakley Stovall sings to close out the Backstage show. Susie Mosher intros him, ‘I always love to have Paul bring up the rear, so to speak…”
Performer and playwright, Stovall’s “Immediate Family” garnered strong reviews in June when it played at the Goodman Theater. Said Steve Edwards of The Bez, “I thought to myself, ‘This may be the timeliest play in Chicago right now.’”
The play centers around the upper-middle class Bryant family, together to celebrate Tony’s wedding. Tony’s older brother, Jesse, is the heart of the play, however, because he is gay — and closeted.
There are many secrets, but that one drives the action through a profound exploration of race, sexual identity, religion — and family.
